Look around a little bit to see what they are doing, and enjoy this tribute to one of the great movies of all time. The HAL screensaver has just been updated to work on Mavericks, and you can get it at the HAL Project website. 2001: A Space Odyssey director Stanley Kubrick would be proud. It's a striking screensaver, and really looks just like the HAL screens from the movie.

To be honest, I prefer the free version because it fills the full screen of my Mac, but I donated the five bucks for the paid version because I appreciate what the HAL Project is doing. The screensaver is free, but there is a US$5 version that eliminates the splash screen and has eight HAL screens with the HAL unit in the middle.
#Hal 9000 screens update#
The screensaver version of the HAL GUI has been around for years, but it's recently had a major update to provide smooth animation and really authentic simulations of the HAL screens. Their first project was an animated desktop back in 1999. The folks at the HAL Project have been involved with simulating the look of HAL for years. TUTORIALS.Remember the iconic HAL 9000 computer from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey? We all wanted our own HAL, even though he pretty thoroughly crashed in the movie: "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." To order your very own HAL 9000 click the BUY NOW button or email nice tutorial of this kit online. Resistor, shrink tubing, LED (your choice of BLUE or RED), wiring, instructions. Includes on/off switch, 9v battery connector, You can add an electronics package to this for $12. There has been a fair bit of information scattered hither and yon, so I decided to centralize my findings into a single report.

The body is cast hollow to allow for electronics (LED for the eye, motion sensor/speaker circuitry).ġ.) The faceplate casting (hollow in the rear to allow electronics installationĢ.) Laser cut professional Vinyl Decal (your choice of HAL or SAL) 1 I have spent the last while researching and documenting the HAL 9000 faceplate props used in 2001: a Space Odyssey a design that's a truly iconic piece of movie history. To make hollow cavity castings, I crafted a positive brick that is designed to lay inside the laminated faceplate mold.

The following photo shows how the laser cut grid plate was fastened into position.Īlthough the wood was milled fairly smooth and grain free, wanted the faceplate to have REALLY smooth sides, so I lined them in styrene strips and trimmed the corners flush. Once the lamination was solid and the edges routed smooth, we machined the inset hole for the eyepiece: The photo below shows the laser cut acrylic being laminated onto the wood faceplate body.

Once that lamination was cured, I trimmed the edges flat with the faceplate. I did this by laminating a few sheets of high density/low grain wood (poplar) but to the measurements of my CAD file. Here's what this looked like directly off my laser cutter: This necessitated vector files for: 1.) The baseplate (etched with the positions of the upper layers) 2.) The gridplate 3.) the decal plate 4.) the lens rings To do this properly I decided to create vectors for each individual height layer. Once I had a height measurement, all the other pieces were scaled accordingly and drawn out in my CAD software. Check out his INSTRUCTABLE HERE: Īfter analyzing many libraries of frame captures and reference photos of the HAL9000 from 20, I decided on a height scale for the faceplate. David Strine utlized this HAL kit to modify Amazon Alexa. This is an excellent example of how you can customize this kit. The ENTIRE unit is 4.28" wide and 12" tall. The speaker box housing area is 3.78" wide (96 mm), and 2.2" (56.4 mm) tall. **FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN MODDING this Hal 9000 With Speakers, a real IR Sensor, thermostat nest controller, here are the specs: The eye lens housing is 3.1" (79.1 mm) diameter. Please allow a minimum of 3-4 weeks for shipment after order. UPDATE: You can choose between these two style decals: **UPDATED 2019 - each HAL kit ships with a laser cut brushed aluminum screen!!

Welcome to my HAL9000 webpage! This project started in Feb 2010 and completed in March 2010.
